Sangre de grado is a medium sized tree that grows in the Amazon region higher than Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. Although the tree is tall, the trunk has a diameter smaller than 30 cm. The name of Peru sangre de grado means dragon's blood in Spanish. Indeed, when the tree trunk is cut or engraved, resinous sap out of a dark red color as if the same tree bleeding. The genus Croton is quite broad and includes some 750 species of trees and shrubs distributed along the tropical and subtropical regions of both hemispheres. Qeusto trees are rich in alkaloids active and many species are well-known medicinal plants which are used as purgatives and tonics.

The sap of sangre de grado contains many elements including phyto proantocianidine (antioxidants), simple phenols, diterpeni, phytosterols, alkaloids and biologically active lignin. Scientists have attributed many of the biological properties of the active lymph (especially the healing action) to two main constituents: an alkaloid called taspina and lignin dimetilcedrusina call.
Of course, botanists, herbalists and naturopaths discrepancies so reductionist conclusions, and in this particular case, their disagreement is proved by science. Antiviral properties, anti-diarrhea sangre de grado have been the subject of attention of the pharmaceutical industry over the past 10 years. A U.S. company has patented three preparations containing constituents antivirals and new chemical elements (a group of plant flavonoids that have been called SP-303) extracted from the bark and resin of sangre de grado. The drugs included a patented oral product for the treatment of respiratory viral infections, a topical antiviral product for the treatment of herpes, and an oral product for the treatment of persistent diarrhea. These products have been the subject of many experiments.

Although the immunomodulating effects of sangre de grado have not yet been the target of research, some scholars believe that the anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant may provide an enhanced immune unspecified.

Recently, many have been conducted scientific tests on a particular product containing sangre de grado (a balm for the skin) have been reported effects superior to placebo in alleviating itching, pain, discomfort, sweating and redness caused by insects (wasps, ants, mosquitoes, bees), wounds, abrasions and allergic reactions to plants. Traditional preparation:

For external use, the resin is applied directly over the affected area several times a day and left to dry. NB: The resin is red and temporarily stain the skin of a red-brown (which is washed away). To reduce the stains, we recommend that you rub the resin on the palm of your hand or on the affected area.
For internal use: 10-15 drops with a small amount of liquid to be taken 1-3 times a day (but be prepared: the taste is horrible!)
